FASHION LABEL CRAFT
Known For
Innovative Design

By Megan Brunhofer

The up-and-coming fashion label, Craft, is distinguished by its innovative design, or more specifically, by its extraordinary use of the ordinary. Surprisingly, the girl behind the label, Christine Domanic, is just wrapping up her undergraduate career at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Don't be fooled... Despite the fact that she is still trudging through her course-load in art school, she has a LOT of experience taking what would otherwise be considered junk and turning it into wearable art.

Her knack for improvisation was apparent at an early age. Cardboard shoes, a bubble wrap three-piece suit, and wire jewelry were among her creations. The bubble wrap ensemble, although good in theory, turned out to be quite impractical; however, she continues to design wire jewelry (in fact, the pieces in the wire jewelry collection are among her best-selling items). But, perhaps the most notable trend is her incorporation of every-day household items into fashion production.

"One man's trash is another man's treasure" and the dumpster-diving, thrift-store shopping designer, Christine Domanic, lives by this truism. "Garbage Night" happens to be her favorite night of the week. She also frequents thrift-stores and flea markets with the intention of revamping her finds. The "Fuel Truck Bag." currently available on her website, was carefully tailored from a goodwill t-shirt and a vintage skirt. A virtual one-man sweatshop, Domanic designs and produces each collection through a painstaking process of trial and error. All of the pieces in her collection are hand-made and one-of-a-kind; and perhaps the appeal lies in the fact that each item is unique and cannot be reproduced.

Her summer collection features three t-shirts. One of the tees has the saying "Ta-Ta Turbo" spelled out in felt letters across the chest, but you don't necessarily have to be busty to wear it (but you should definitely be in a cheeky mood!) Another tee has ragged patches embroidered on the front. The third tee in the collection , a personal favorite, depicts a diagram of the human heart. Blue and red arteries add a splash of color to the hand-painted illustration, which allows the wearer to wear her heart on her sleeve, quite literally.

The t-shirts are available on her website craftproduct.com . If you happen to live in the Pittsburgh area, swing by her quaint boutique at 4032 Butler Street. Also be sure to check out her collection of jewelry, hats, bags, and scarves, because if you are wearing a Craft t-shirt paired with your favorite jeans you will definitely want to accessorize, accessorize, accessorize.
