The Streets Of Jamaica
By Maria Tettamanti

Some say Jamaica is the rooster of the Caribbean. It's loud, vibrant, fun, funky and down-to-earth. It's a place where the sea is filled with Crayola-colored tropical fish and where the terrain is sun-drenched with lush landscapes. The air is eternally permeated with the spicy scent of burning pimento wood and the sounds of groovy reggae music. Its people are just as colorful as their diverse surroundings - they are warm, amusing, inviting and kind.

Rugged and raw, St. Ann's Bay, located just 10 minutes outside of Ocho Rios, is bustling with sheer energy. While street vendors holler in Jamaican Patois, where "that" is pronounced "dat" and "three" becomes "trees," the locals haggle for bargains over everything from coconuts to flip-flops. Green and red ackee trees line the candy-colored town while the natives buzz around in search of a killer deal and good grub. One can't help but notice the ramshackle stands selling jerk chicken, and there's no more authentic local experience than to stop at one of these shacks and order a lunch of jerk chicken preferably washed down with a Red Stripe beer. And one seriously can't help but stare and raise an eyebrow as dreadlocked Rastafarians roam the roads as sweet ganja wafts through the atmosphere. St. Ann's Bay local Errol Parker says, "This is the most beautiful place in the world - there's just no way I could live elsewhere."

Another brawny local by the name of Boxer chimes in, "Where else can you go for a dip in the ocean seven days a week? Life is a luxury here." Life is also boisterous in the Bay. Reggae rhymes are blasted over loudspeakers while locals gregariously sink their teeth into spicy meat patties. Children skedaddle about like it's recess and men hoot, "Hottie, hottie," to our model, Annette. Clearly, life here isn't confined to business suits and nine-to-fives - it is anything but ordinary.
