MAY 2007 - MOVIE REVIEWS Indie Films, Cinematic Gems & Acclaimed Directors | | | | Kya Love Story Hai Directed by Lovely Singh This stale tale of young love is the focus of this Hindi film. The characters become entwined in a love triangle that may remind you of what it was like to be in enamored with someone. The story is not a new one and rather predictable. Boy sees girl, boy falls in love with girl but doesn’t tell her about his feelings at first (perhaps for fear of rejection); somehow girl finds out about boy’s passion but doesn’t reciprocate instantly. Disappointed, boy disappears for a while and upon his return, finds the object of his affection engaged to another. The viewer may notice that the movie is a boiling pot of one too many clichés- friendship, love, passion, which at the end only makes for one tedious and rather unbalanced feature. The actors’ performances are bearable but definitely not mindblowing. However if what you fancy is a love story which probably would not fall in the confines of modern day reality, then grab a bowl of popcorn and join the love/passion stricken characters on their journey. | | | | |
| | The Namesake Directed by Mira Nair This rather compelling film set in New York and Calcutta and spanning several decades tells the story of a Bengali couple who moves from India to the USA and gives birth to a son. Their son, Gogol, named after a Russian author, is conflicted about his heritage and embarrassed by his parents’ Indian values. He declares his independence by getting involved with a rich American girl but ends up marrying an Indian woman, although at the end there is a bit of a surprise ending. This remarkable story based on the best-selling novel, although perhaps better suited for reading, is definitely one film you will want to check out. Director, Mina Nair’s moving storytelling glues you to your seat and forces you to admire a job well done. It’s a tale of assimilation, love, family and cultural identity in a land where all is seemingly possible. A hint of humor underlines the movie and provides a bit of comic relief for an otherwise dramatic film. His fed up parents conjure up scheme on top of scheme each more desperate then the other, to get him out. Unfortunately nothing seems to work and the parents are running out of ideas and patience. Subtle humor and witty dialogue keeps the viewer plugged in throughout this endearing comedy of what to do when life just won’t give you a break. Chris Rock takes a shot at playing a more serious role. In “I think I love my wife” Chris Rock is a man who finds himself trapped in the monotony of a regular, steady and excruciatingly boring sexless marriage. As ennui reaches its peak, a sexy and tantalizing woman friend from Rock’s past appears, bringing with her a whirlwind of trouble. It’s the age old dilemma, does he plunge into a passionate affair filled with the promise of exciting sex or does he remain committed to his comfortable, secure marriage. Overall the film has its funny and crude moments and makes for a decent way to spend a Friday night. However waiting for it to come out on video and spending the ten dollars on something else might be a wiser. | | | | | | | The Perfect Stranger Directed by Chris Foley
Bruce Willis and Halle Berry, get together on the big screen in a story with threads of intrigue woven together around one twisted murder. Rowena (Berry), a journalist goes undercover as a temp in an attempt to nail her friend’s killer. The premise of the movie seemed exciting and the expected chemistry between Bruce and Halle made for a much anticipated movie. Ironically, despite the star power, the flick is unsatisfying at best. Giovani Ribisi’s stellar performance as Halle’s nerdy sidekick is the lone bright spot in this otherwise implausible thriller. Halle’s outfits however were outstanding. She’s never looked more stunning! If you reckon that’s reason enough to go to the theaters then do so and share your thoughts!
