The Reluctant Fundamentalist
By Mohsin Hamid

After reading this, I can say one thing about The Reluctant Fundamentalist: this one took guts. This short and powerful novel packs a strong punch. Hamid’s protagonist is a Muslim man engaged in a dialogue with a mysterious American in the middle of a bazaar in Lahore, Pakistan. Through this often amusing interchange, we come to read about a character who has a very different (for Americans) and very honest (for many Muslims) perspective on 9-11, the schism between the American and the Muslim world, and the struggle of those who have seen both sides of the story. This book doesn’t hold anything back.

Company
By Max Berry
The Office set to paper, Max Barry’s hysterical spoof of corporate America will have anyone who has ever worked for a big company rolling in their ergonomic seats. When Stephen Jones joins Zephyr Holdings, he has no idea what the company does, what their mission statement means, and how it makes money; when he learns that none of the other employees of the firm know this information, things start to get interesting. Missing donuts, a mythical CEO, and all the red tape you can imagine will have you reminiscing about your own experiences as you chuckle along. A wonderful read by an Australian author who has seen American business at its silliest.

The Pale Blue Eye
By Louis Bayard
I love historic novels, so The Pale Blue Eye, set in 1830 at West Point Academy, had drawn my eye straight away. I love crime novels, so the whodunit premise, complete with an aging Sherlock Holmesian constable, appealed to me straight away. But the master stroke of Bayard’s bestseller is the role of the cadet who gets recruited to help the detective discover who killed a fellow student and cut out their heart. Who is the young man assigned to help crack the case? A brash, intelligent character with a penchant for breaking the rules, named Edgar Allan Poe. Click on the image to buy now!
