Damascus, Syria: Art House Summer Music Festival 07
June 27-August 23

In an effort to celebrate Syrian art and exhibit rising local talents, several projects have emerged to encourage art investments in Damascus. Perhaps its most famous development today is the hip boutique hotel ''Art House''. A watermill built in 1625, it was restored and an 11 room hotel/gallery was conceived. Each room is decorated after a famous Syrian artist, using his or her passions and creativity. The main lounge is the gallery where colossal paintings from artists like Hamoud Shantout and Sara Shamma give exuberance to the lofty space. Since its opening earlier this year, the Art House has become the new destination for cultural events and selected private parties. However, the main event for this summer is Music Festival ‘07. A mélange of Opera, Classical, Jazz and much more is guaranteed to create a harmonic evening for music enthusiasts.

London, England: The Notting Hill Carnival
August 26- 27

The late Celia Cruz sang "la vida es un carnival"; and for years of independence, immigrants united through Europe's biggest street march, helping fight racism and bringing people together. At the end of this month, London becomes alive with calypso beats and the sounds of whistles, drums and the screams of an ecstatic crowd. Masqueraded dancers parade their costumes with a snappy attitude and a fiery Caribbean flavor. Forget Rio, the Notting Hill Carnival is the next best thing.
