It's a place where two oceans collide, red mountains scrape the sky and
cacti thrive. It's known around the world as "Land's End"
- an oasis in the desert. Have you solved the riddle yet? I'm talking
about Cabo San Lucas, Mexico where the sun pours down like rich honey.
Located on the tip of Baja California, Cabo is the destination for those
who like to do everything or nothing at all. If your idea of R&R is
laying poolside with a margarita in hand, then you're in luck. And if
you enjoy ATV riding, parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing,
kayaking, mountain biking, sailing, car racing, horseback riding, whale
watching, fishing and golfing, you are in for a pleasant surprise. Cabo
caters to both beach bums and thrill seekers.
SLEEP
Our travel plans had us staying at the beachfront Marquis Los Cabos Beach, Golf, Spa
& Casitas Resort. Nestled where the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean
meet, all of the suites offer a dramatic ocean view. All Marquis guestrooms
feature Frette bed linens, marble bathrooms, Bulgari toiletries, hydro-massage
bathtubs and complimentary breakfast delivered daily through a small,
latticed alcove. Did we mention each room is tres chic? The 15,000 square-foot
holistic spa (indulge in their signature Marquis Holistic Massage - it's
heaven, we swear) is also a major perk. The Marquis Los Cabos houses three
Michelin-pedigree restaurants making it possible to never leave the resort
if soaking in the sun's rays and dining is your mission at hand.
EAT
We ate to our heart's content at restaurants including Marquis Los Cabos'
Dos Mares, Vista Ballenas and Canto del Mar. We were especially impressed
with the presentation and service at Canto del Mar, where dinner starts
off in a charming smoking room (premium Cuban cigars and top-shelf cognac
at your fingertips!) and comes to a close in an intimate candlelit room.
While guests at Canto del Mar don't have access to printed menus as the
menu changes every three days, they are able to choose dishes for each
course to their preference. We gorged ourselves on Lobster Bisque, Duck
Consommé, Roasted King Scallops and Chocolate Souffle as our
own personal bartender mixed Cosmopolitans by our tableside. Between bites
of fare, we enjoyed a spectacular sunset and listened to the ocean's singsong
of cascading currents.
DRINK AND BE MERRY
Tequila! It's one of Mexico's most famous exports, so why not sample some
at one of Cabo's vivacious watering holes. We took a profound liking to
The Office - we even thought telling friends back home "Hey, I'm
kicking back with a few brewskies at The Office!" had a comical
ring to it. Located right on Playa Médano, The Office offers barflies
a spectacular view of El Arco (The Arch), the famous rock formation at
the tip of Baja Peninsula. The Office, unlike your workplace we imagine,
encourages barefoot attire, pails of ice-cold Pacifico beers, burrito
consumption and shots of tequila from a jolly mariachi - triumphant whistles
and all. And after your "mandatory meeting" at The Office,
take a water taxi ride to the tip of the Baja California peninsula to
a stretch of sand called Lover's Beach.
Possibly the No. 1 Downtown Cabo tourist spot is Cabo Wabo. "Where
land ends, and the party begins," is Cabo Wabo's mantra and owner
Sammy Hagar (yes, the Van Halen front man) makes sure every day lives
up to that bold statement. If Hagar's in town, you can expect a live concert
from the rock legend himself, and you can take a little Wabo home with
you in the form of, you guessed it, Cabo Wabo tequila.
A hop, skip and jump away from Cabo Wabo is the Giggling Marlin. The Marlin's
claim to fame is hoisting people upside down by their ankles à la
caught marlin and funneling tequila down the lucky catch's hatch. Ole!
EXPLORE
As mentioned earlier, Cabo offers a menagerie of outdoor activities. We
opted for a sunset horseback ride through the canyons with Cuadra San
Francisco. Stable owner Francisco Barrena says, "The best sunset
rides are in the hills, not the beach, and that's where we take you."
For you trivia buffs, it was Barrena's steeds you saw galloping through
the dunes of the movie Troy. In fact, I asked Barrena if I could ride
Brad Pitt's horse, but was answered with, "That particular horse
was sold and lives in California now." A gentle ride through the
orange canyons was more than enough to lift my spirits, for there's a
supernatural sensation in Cabo's desert
peaks and valleys. The lush plant life is both distinctive and unusual
while the rock formations are magnificently mind-blowing. Desert wildlife
is aplenty with unique insects, birds, lizards, fox, coyote, rabbit and
of course the odd snake or two. The energy deep into the hills is palpable
and Mother Nature's splendor shines through and through.
SHOP!
There are two main shopping districts to choose from while in these parts
of Baja California - Downtown Cabo San Lucas and Downtown San José
del Cabo. While Downtown San José del Cabo offers an authentic Mexican
pueblo setting, one can peruse the many glass factories, silver shops,
liquor stores and art galleries. Curious Carmela in San José del
Cabo is the one-stop shop as it carries a large assortment of Mexican
arts and crafts perfect for souvenirs back home. Cabo San Lucas, on the
other hand, is much larger than San José del Cabo and offers countless
boutiques. Do visit Puerto Paraiso on the marina for original art, jewelry
and handcrafted keepsakes.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, RELAX
As you sit on your private balcony and watch the sun blast into a thousand
sparks out on the horizon, reflect and relax. You will find that in Cabo,
it's easy to fall in love with life again. Perhaps it's found in the warm
nature of its native people, or possibly it's in the powder-white sands
of Lover's Beach. We like to think there's something magical going on
in this pleasing peninsula called Land's End.
