FEBRUARY 2008 - MUSIC REVIEWS Cool Vibes, World Beats & Haunting Vocalists | |
| | In Rainbows By Radiohead You have to love this about Radiohead: even as they seem to reinvent themselves, they manage to stay true to themselves. In Rainbows, their latest work, has a few departures from the classic Radiohead style, and yet it is unmistakably theirs. From the almost-peppy "15-step" to the mellow-soft "Nude," the tracks on this carry that same combination of unique lyrics and darkly melodic harmonies that have built and sustained the band's fame over the years. In Rainbows is merely the latest in a fine portfolio of work. Click on the image to buy now!

| | Into the Flood By As Tall As Lions Like Coldplay? Then you'll probably enjoy As Tall As Lions, who have mimicked Coldplay's sound right down to the high-pitched, soft vocals. There are some echoes of Radiohead here as well (ironic that this review should follow Radiohead's In Rainbows), but it's a mellower, less punchy brand of music. Of the tracks on this album, "Ghost of York" and "We're the ones that keep you warm at night" were among the strongest, both musically and lyrically. The soundtrack is no different. "Roll in the Hay" and "He Vas My Boyfriend" are so silly that you can't help but laugh. And of course, "Puttin' On the Ritz" is one of the most memorable moments in the story. At the end of the day, this isn't one of those soundtracks that will remain immortalized in the public conscience, like Cats or Phantom. But Mel Brooks fans will enjoy it.
