SKY HIGH FASHION
Adolfo Dominguez
Reintroduces Glamour
To Air Travel

By Doha Challah

High fashion is heading for the blue skies on Iberia Airlines of Spain. Come fall, Spanish designer Adolfo Domínguez will be the face behind Iberia's new chic uniforms. Midnight blue and red hues now rule the new look for Iberia's 10,000 employees. Even more exclusive, trousers are being included as an optional garment for female personnel. Domínguez joins other acclaimed designers such as Alfredo Caral, Elio Berhanyer, Pertegaz and Pedro Rodríguez who have designed uniforms for Iberia in the past. Flying high has never looked so good!

Vis.A.Vis fashion editor Doha Challah caught up with renowned Spanish designer Adolfo Dominguez at Miami Beach's fashionable Zen retreat, The Setai.

DC- By designing for Iberia Airlines, you are reviving the notion of air travel as a glamorous experience, why? And do you think that you're starting a new trend that other airlines will adopt?

AD- It was an honor to be chosen. It was a competition, like everything else in life, and I offered the best proposal. It's a very complex task to dress 10,000 people scattered around the globe, so we had to have the means to get the measurements. So it was a serious undertaking. The fact is, what all designers wish for is to take what surrounds us to make it more beautiful, more fashionable.

DC- What inspires you as a designer? Any movements around the world? Who's your fashion muse?

AD- My muse is my wife, I also have three daughters. Designers offer proposals, some of them are rejected and some are accepted. What is accepted is what's fashionable. I really pay attention to people's needs, because what we should do here is make life better, make people even more beautiful. Some designers don't pay attention to creativity, I do.

DC- You started with designing suits for men, was the transition to women hard to achieve?

AD- I started with men because there was nothing for men other than suits, shirts and ties; we used to dress like the business community. So sports wear and casual wear took over. Then we moved to women, kids, etc.

DC- Defining everything that is stylish, you have license agreements for Adolpho Domínguez homeward, eyewear and stationary, also  your AD accessories, what's next for the company?

AD- The opportunity to grow and expand, to have more stores around the world.

DC-- Why did you choose Miami for your US flagship store? Does it have to do with Miami's cultural diversity, being a gate way to the world?

AD- Where I live is quite cold, Miami is so warm, so beautiful, it's a very special city. Being Spanish I feel more comfortable here than in New York. Obviously, Miami is a cosmopolitan city, a very cultural place.
